Chevy Silverado vs GMC Sierra

The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and the 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 are full size pickups from the same company. The engine options line up. The trim levels, the tailgate, and the pricing do not.

Shoppers compare the Chevy Silverado and the GMC Sierra when the trucks look like twins and the stickers do not match. Chevrolet lists the 2027 Silverado 1500 WT, the work truck trim, from $38,600. GMC lists the 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 Pro from $39,300. Those are starting MSRPs before destination, taxes, and fees. Chevrolet marks the Silverado 1500 numbers as preproduction and says they can change before trucks arrive in late 2026.

We sell the Chevrolet Silverado in Sheridan, not GMC. You can test drive a Silverado 1500 here and use this page to see where a GMC Sierra would differ. If you already own a GMC Sierra, bring the window sticker. That sticker beats a national chart. Both the GMC Sierra and the Chevrolet Silverado still have to match the load you actually haul.

The short version

Same engines

Both list a 6.6L V8, a 5.7L V8, TurboMax, and a 3.0L Duramax, each with a 10-speed.

Tow gap is small

Chevy lists up to 13,700 pounds with the 5.7L. GMC lists up to 13,500 pounds with the 5.7L.

Different badges

Trail Boss and ZR2 on the Silverado. AT4, AT4X, and Denali on the Sierra.

What they cost to start

Chevrolet’s 2027 Silverado 1500 page lists these starting MSRPs: WT $38,600, Custom $43,600, LT and Z71 $47,900, High Country $71,700, ZR2 $77,200. GMC’s 2027 Sierra 1500 page lists Pro $39,300, Elevation $50,200, AT4 $70,700, Denali $70,900, AT4X $82,700, and Denali Ultimate $85,100.

A WT and a Pro are not the same truck as a High Country or a Denali Ultimate. Compare two trucks with the same cab, bed, and drivetrain, then read the sticker.

Engine options and torque

Engine Silverado 1500 Sierra 1500
6.6L V8 481 hp / 501 lb-ft 481 hp / 501 lb-ft
5.7L V8 402 hp / 428 lb-ft 402 hp / 428 lb-ft
TurboMax 350 hp / 455 lb-ft 350 hp / 455 lb-ft
3.0L Duramax 305 hp / 495 lb-ft 305 hp / 495 lb-ft

Both brands pair those engine options with a 10-speed automatic. Horsepower and torque are separate ratings. A truck does not make peak horsepower and peak torque at the same time. The 6.6L leads the torque chart at 501 lb-ft. The Duramax is close, at 495 lb-ft of torque, with less horsepower.

Older comparisons still talk about a 5.3L or a 6.2L. That is not the 2027 list on the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 page or the GMC Sierra 1500 page. Use the four engines in the table.

Towing capacity and payload capacity

Chevrolet lists a maximum towing capacity of 13,700 pounds on the 2027 Silverado 1500 with the available 5.7L, and calls that best in class on its page. The same page lists 9,700 pounds with the 6.6L, 9,400 with TurboMax, and 12,000 with the Duramax. The lowest tow figure in the Silverado 1500 FAQ is 7,200 pounds. Payload capacity on that page runs 1,510 to 2,340 pounds by engine.

GMC lists a GMC Sierra towing capacity of up to 13,500 pounds with the 5.7L, and up to 12,100 pounds with the Duramax. GMC Sierra payload capacity changes with the cab and bed. A short-bed crew cab is listed up to 2,020 pounds. A regular-cab, standard-bed, rear-drive truck is listed up to 2,320 pounds. Some older write-ups still say 13,300 pounds for the Chevy Silverado and 13,000 for the GMC Sierra. Those are not the 2027 maxima on the brand pages.

Those are maximums for a properly equipped truck. Your trailer, the people in the cab, and the options come off the real number. Fuel economy is printed on the window sticker for that engine. We are not guessing an MPG here. If the job is a heavy fifth-wheel, a half-ton is the wrong class. Our Silverado 2500 HD page is the next step up.

Key differences in the trim levels

Chevrolet lists these Silverado 1500 trim levels: WT, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, Z71, Trail Boss, High Country, and ZR2. Z71 is standard on a four-wheel-drive LT. Trail Boss, Custom Trail Boss, and ZR2 get a 2-inch lift. ZR2 rides on 35-inch mud-terrain tires. The Chevy Silverado does not use the old LTZ or RST names on this 2027 page.

GMC lists Pro, Elevation, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate. The GMC Sierra page does not list SLE or SLT for this model year. MultiPro tailgate is standard from Elevation up. That tailgate is one of the interior and bed differences you can see with the tailgate open. AT4 and AT4X get a 2-inch lift. AT4X adds 35-inch mud-terrain tires, front and rear electronic lockers, and Baja mode.

Size is close. Chevrolet lists Silverado 1500 length at 212.1 to 242.5 inches and width at 81.2 inches including mirrors. GMC lists GMC Sierra length at about 212.1 to 242.6 inches, width at 81.4 inches without mirrors, and bed volume of 62.9, 71.7, or 89.1 cubic feet for short, standard, and long beds. GMC lists seating for up to 6. Count the seats you need, then check the seat layout on the sticker. A crew cab is the one that carries those extra seats.

Which half-ton fits the job

Stay with a Silverado if

You want a Chevy dealer, a lower starting WT price, or a Trail Boss or ZR2. Buyers who want the Chevrolet Silverado can test drive one on the lot in Sheridan.

Look at a Sierra if

You want Denali, AT4, or the MultiPro tailgate as standard equipment on the higher trims. We do not sell GMC here, so that truck is a comparison, not inventory.

Common questions

Is a Silverado the same truck as a Sierra?

They share the half-ton engines listed above. Trim names, tailgate equipment, and starting prices differ. Read the sticker on the exact truck.

Which one tows more?

Chevrolet lists up to 13,700 pounds with the available 5.7L. GMC lists up to 13,500 pounds with the 5.7L. Both numbers assume the right equipment. A different engine tows less.

Which is cheaper?

The published starting MSRP is lower on the Silverado WT, at $38,600, than on the Sierra Pro, at $39,300. A loaded High Country or Denali is a different purchase.

Can I see both in Sheridan?

You can see the Silverado at Wareing Sheridan Chevrolet. We do not stock the Sierra. Bring the Sierra details you care about and we can line them up against a Silverado on the lot.
